Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder causes typical heartburn and regurgitation in 45% of the American public according to a Gallup poll. That figure under represents the large numbers of people with reflux without heartburn causing asthma, non-cardiac chest pain and laryngitis, and the precancerous changes of Barrett’s esophagus in unsuspecting patients with minimal symptoms or symptoms that patients manage with over the counter remedies. It has been estimated that 20% of adults have reflux presenting with throat and respiratory symptoms. While many patients can be treated easily with a wide variety of excellent approaches, there are many complexities and confusions currently pervading the care of GERD. Many patients have cardiac catheterization for non-cardiac chest pain. Others with Laryngopharyngeal reflux are treated unsuccessfully with allergy and asthma treatments.
